The Ring

Based on Wagner’s “Ring of the Nibelung,” a cycle of four operas—the largest operatic work in history at 19 hours—the work is simply called “The Ring,” referring to the powerful ring on the finger.

The term “Ring” has become so deeply ingrained that it can now be used for this magical cycle. Which term do you prefer? Let us know!

Regensburg: Schikaneder grew up here as a half-orphan. Schikaneder was a member of the Regensburg Cathedral Choir. Schikaneder received music lessons from the Cathedral Music Director, Johann Josef Michl. Schikaneder was a member of the Freemasons’ Lodge “Carl to the Three Keys.” Therefore, in 1787, he went to Regensburg with his theater troupe for two years, where he worked as an independent impresario in the ballroom on Ägidienplatz, which was rented by Prince Carl Anselm von Thurn und Taxis.
