Dear cultural decision-makers in the cities,
Opera is an expensive business; practically all opera houses receive 80% city subsidies. The artistic director of the Theater an der Wien put it perfectly:
“…that due to significant budget cuts that the MusikTheater an der Wien will have to cope with from 2026 onwards and in the coming years, there will probably be no possibility of pursuing the idea of a Schikaneder Festival any further. At the moment, we hope that it will be possible and that we will succeed in bringing the already planned projects to the stage with the available resources at our theater….”

Siegfried – in Wagner’s Ring Cycle – grinds the fragments of the sword into shavings and melts them down to create the sword Nothung, with which he slays the dragon and wins the treasure and power. Let’s do the same: With many small contributions, namely your subscriptions for a public viewing of the 4K livestream of the festival, we can realize an open-air production in Bavaria’s newest spa town, Bad Weißenstadt am See, by working together!
In this way, we can conquer the budget dragon and claim the cultural treasure of launching a Schikaneder Festival, based on the life’s work of Emanuel Schikaneder, who became world-famous with The Magic Flute. From the Magic Flute Ring Cycle of six operas, we want to stage the world premiere of the opera Sarastro with original texts by Goethe—a global sensation with a grand romantic opera that, apart from a concert performance in 1891, has never been performed live.
These operas, and indeed the entire Schikaneder Ring cycle, are all German-language productions, but they are already fully internationalized and available in 12 world languages at www.text.jetzt. This allows your international public viewing audience to read along with the texts on their tablets or smartphones.
So, join us! You’ll essentially get an entire opera public viewing experience for free and make a multi-innovative German-language Schikaneder Festival possible.
Your subscription, as the name suggests, is a pre-booking. With enough pre-bookings, the festival will take place!
Since we must also consider the “worst-case scenario” for the sake of reliability, in that case, the subscription would be canceled up to two days before the event, WITHOUT your credit card being charged.
